Professor Ortega began his martial arts study in Shotokan and Taekwondo. While stationed in Germany during his enlistment in the US Army in 1979 Prof. Ortega studied Kodokan Judo. In 1985 Professor Ortega returned to Hawaii and met his mentor Grandmaster Professor Tony Sotero Jr. 9th Dan in the American Jujitsu Institute, 5th Dan in Kajukenbo, and Master Guro in Escrima Tabosa. Prof. Ortega was honored to be promoted to black belt under Prof. Sotero Jr., and was honorably accepted as a personal student of GM Christopher Matsuo, Bagua./Daito ryu Roppo Kai Aikijujitsu, and Ninjitsu.
After three years under GM Matsuo, Prof. Ortega was promoted to Black Belt.
